Charaka described thirteen types of Agni in the Charaka Samhita. One central fire - jatharagni, the digestive fire seated in the stomach and small intestine along with twelve subsidiary fires governing the transformation of food into the seven body tissues. His central claim: jatharagni is the root of all the others. When the central digestive intelligence is functioning well, everything downstream functions well. When it's impaired, everything degrades.
He described four states of jatharagni. Sama agni: balanced. Digestion is regular, elimination is consistent, energy is stable after meals, the body feels clear. Vishama agni: irregular, variable. Digestion is unpredictable, sometimes strong, sometimes sluggish. Associated with vata excess, anxiety, gas, and bloating. Tikshna agni: excessively sharp, hypermetabolic. Hunger comes too frequently, digestion is fast but incomplete, associated with inflammation and irritability. Manda agni: low, sluggish. Slow digestion, heaviness after meals, weight gain, congestion. Associated with kapha excess.
He was building a functional map of the gut, not in the anatomical detail that later became possible, but in terms of its behavior and what that behavior indicated about systemic health. Impaired jatharagni produced ama: undigested material that Charaka described as sticky, heavy, and toxic, the residue of incomplete processing that accumulated in the channels and created the conditions for disease. Not metaphor. A description of what happens when digestion is chronically insufficient.
There is a nerve running from your brainstem through your chest and into your abdomen called the vagus nerve. It carries signals in both directions. Brain to gut, gut to brain. About 80% of the traffic runs upward from gut to brain. Your gut is generating more information than it receives. The enteric nervous system contains 500 million neurons. It operates semi-independently of the brain and is in direct communication with it through the vagus nerve and through the bloodstream.
The gut microbiome produces approximately 90% of the body's serotonin. It produces neurotransmitters, short-chain fatty acids that directly affect brain function, and immune signals that regulate systemic inflammation. The gut is not a passive digestive tube. It is an active participant in mood regulation, immune function, cognitive performance, and the calibration of the stress response.
Charaka didn't have this vocabulary. What he had was a clinical framework built on observation: the state of digestion determined the state of health, and impaired digestion created systemic disease. The specific mechanism he could not have described. But his conclusion was right, and his practices were calibrated for the right target.
Eat warm, cooked food. Avoid eating when stressed. Don't eat until the previous meal has been processed (wait until you're actually hungry, not just scheduled). Eat at consistent times so the gut's circadian rhythms can set. Use digestive spices, cumin, coriander, fennel, and ginger to support enzymatic activity. These are Charaka's prescriptions. They are also the current consensus in functional gastroenterology for supporting microbiome health and optimal digestive function.
